Big news: Another tiny house festival coming to Colorado Springs

By Rachel Riley

After a year-long hiatus, the city again will host a "tiny house" expo.

In 2015 and 2016, the Tiny House Jamboree attracted thousands of people to Colorado Springs. The event's founder earlier this year announced the jamboree would be leaving the city, but another tiny house enthusiast has stepped in to fill the gap next year.

The People's Tiny House Fest will be Aug. 3-5 at the Air Force Academy, according to a news release. Tiny house builders, from professional manufacturers to DIYers, will showcase living options.

Tiny houses are typically less than 400 square feet and mounted on trailers. The minimalist trend, touted as a gateway to a more affordable lifestyle, has gained momentum thanks to HGTV shows such as "Tiny House Hunters" and "Tiny House, Big Living."

The festival also will feature sustainable living projects, speakers, panels, music and local food. Organizers say they expect attendees from across Colorado and beyond, according to the press release.

As of Tuesday, 300 tickets for the event had been sold, said event coordinator Marcus Alvarado. The Colorado Springs native helped plan and run the jamboree during its two-year run in the city.

"I'm excited to establish a long-term event that Colorado Springs can cherish for years to come. It's time for our locals to look forward to something other than the Balloon Glow and Territory Days," Alvarado said.

Darin Zaruba, founder of the Tiny House Jamboree, told The Gazette in July that he sold the event to a major exhibition company after it outgrew the Springs. He also moved the headquarters of his company, EcoCabins, out of the state.

Colorado Springs is home to two other tiny home manufacturers: Sprout and Tumbleweed.
